Morrell Nature Sanctuary
Junior Leadership Program

About the Program

Morrell Nature Sanctuary's Junior Leadership Program offers a unique opportunity for children between the ages of 10 and 12 who have previously attended our Nature Day Camp to return as Junior Leaders. These young leaders act as positive role models for younger campers, assisting camp leaders, and developing communication skills, leadership qualities, and a sense of responsibility. Junior Leaders are expected to be respectful, helpful, and demonstrate initiative in engaging younger children in games, crafts, and activities. Each Junior Leader will receive a certificate upon completion of their five-day commitment, acknowledging their achievements in the program. Please contact the office directly to register your child for the Junior Leadership program.

More Information

Requirements

  • Must be between the ages of 10 and 12
  • Have previously attended the Morrell Nature Sanctuary Day Camp
  • Willing to commit to being a Junior Leader for 5 full consecutive camp days.

Monitoring the Junior Leaders

The Summer Camp Supervisor and Leaders will communicate daily about the progress of the Junior Leaders. If a Junior Leader does not meet the expectations of our program then a three- way meeting will take place between the Junior Leader, parent, and Camp Leaders. It will be determined at this meeting whether or not he/she is able to continue being a Junior Leader at the Morrell Nature Sanctuary.

Availability

Registration for Junior Leaders is on a first-come, first-served basis, for a maximum of 2 weeks in the summer. We allow a maximum of two Junior Leaders for each themed week. Commonly, two friends will register to be Junior Leaders together. The fees for being a Junior Leader are $40 day, the same as those for the younger campers.

Expectations of Junior Leaders:

  • Be respectful and helpful to the camp leaders.
  • Communicate and interact well with other children.
  • Show initiative with games, crafts and activities.
  • Carry out assigned tasks independently.
  • Act as a positive role model for younger children.

Certificate

Each Junior Leader will be given a certificate which states that they met or exceeded the expectations noted above. The certificate will be issued on their fifth or final day of being a Junior Leader. We feel that at least five days are needed in order to develop their leadership qualities.
